Professional artists are invited to apply for the 2020 symposium. The theme of this year’s symposium – sustainability. We invite you to take part in this event – exploring bone china porcelain, techniques, getting professional advice and keeping in mind the sustainable way of existence, as a core for this symposium. And we offer the material, which carries in itself approximately 50 percent of calves bone ash, taken from the agricultural waste.

This symposium will provide a creative platform for experimental workshops where artists from a variety of backgrounds can engage in creative practice using contemporary and traditional forms of ceramic expression. Participants will get to know local environment and cultural context and create bone china artwork for the intended exhibition space. Dialogue between artists will encourage research, experimentation and innovation in ceramic art.  The exhibition of the symposium will be held in Kaunas Picture Gallery, subdivision of Čiurliomis National  Museum. The grand opening of the exhibition is going to  be on  June 26, 2020.

International Bone China Symposium is organized by Vilnius Academy of Arts, Kaunas Faculty.  It is partially funded by Lithuanian Council for Culture and will join European Capital of Culture Kaunas 2022 programme.

Organizers provide

  • Workplace in the ceramic workshop (VAA Kaunas Faculty),
  • Basic tools, materials, firings;
  • Technological assistance with bone china porcelain;
  • Accommodation (shared facilities at VAA Kaunas Faculty guest house), some catering (dinner)
  • Publicity;
  • Cultural excursions;
  • Exhibition of the symposium.


Artist provides

  • Travel expenses to / from Kaunas, Lithuania;
  • Health insurance
  • Specific tools and materials;
  • Public presentation of your art and/or  workshop/technique demonstration
  • Participant donates one artwork/composition created during the symposium, which will be selected together with the organizers of the symposium.

How to  apply: in the  application form you have to  fill  your personal  details and upload your short CV (1-2 pages) and short portfolio  with  5-10 pictures  of your recent work in pdf format. Please name the files by  your name_surname. (The easiest  way  of binding your artworks’ pictures in one pdf file is to  select all files you want and  then select “print to  pdf”).
